Miranda is an antitrust and competition lawyer with a focus on the technology, life sciences and healthcare, transport, energy, and resources sectors.

With more than 25 years of experience, Miranda Cole has extensive experience helping clients navigate increasing regulatory scrutiny from governments and competition authorities. She also supports clients in aligning their competition strategies and policy engagement in response to new regulatory frameworks. 

Miranda helps a broad range of companies with transactional and behavioural matters, advising on merger control; foreign direct investment and foreign subsidies reviews of mergers, acquisitions, and other transactions; abuse of dominance and anticompetitive agreements under Articles 101 and 102 TFEU and Chapters 1 and 2 of the U.K. Competition Act (including vertical and collaborative arrangements); technology transactions; issues relating to intellectual property, access, standardisation, and interoperability; and issues related to information exchange and data), digital regulation (including the EU DMA and AI Act and U.K. DMCC Act), and compliance and advisory strategies and programs.

Vanessa is a partner in our Brussels antitrust, competition and trade team. Her practice covers all aspects of EU and German competition law, including antitrust compliance, antitrust investigations, digital regulation, and merger control as well as foreign investment and foreign subsidies screening.

She has significant experience of complex cross-border merger transactions, including investigations before the European Commission and Germany’s Bundeskartellamt and managing the coordination of parallel regulatory proceedings by authorities worldwide. Her practice also covers antitrust advice on strategic partnerships, compliance systems as well as supply and distribution agreements.

Vanessa co-heads Freshfields’ EU foreign subsidies working group and as well as advising clients on the implications of the new regulation she has been involved in many of the first notifications to the European Commission. She has been advising at the forefront of the EU's Digital Markets Act and has noteworthy experience of abuse of dominance cases in the digital sector.

Stijn is a partner at Geradin Partners. Before joining the firm, Stijn was Legal Director at the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

 

At Geradin Partners, Stijn plays a leading role in the multi-jurisdictional litigation on behalf of publishers against Google relating to its practices in advertising technology (Ad Tech). He is also involved in litigation against Apple relating to the App Store. Outside of litigation, Stijn represents clients in investigations before the European Commission, CMA and Dutch ACM, both defendant and complainant side.

 

At the CMA, Stijn built up extensive experience leading complex competition investigations. Stijn led the legal teams in a number of high-profile investigations in the life sciences sector, including Hydrocortisone, which featured a record-breaking £260m penalty, Fludrocortisone in which the CMA secured a multi-million settlement for the National Health Service, and Quantum Pharmaceuticals.

  

Stijn also led the CMA’s legal preparations for Brexit, advising the UK Government on all legislation and guidance required to prepare the UK’s competition regime for Brexit. In addition, he represented the UK in its final competition intervention in the EU Courts in the landmark merger appeal in Case T-399/16 CK Telecoms v Commission. Stijn also advised the UK Government on the Exclusion Orders issued by the Secretary of State to the Groceries, Healthcare and Transport sectors in response to the coronavirus crisis.

 

Stijn is Dutch-qualified and fluent in Dutch and, prior to joining the CMA eight years ago, advised clients in relation to Dutch and EU-related issues at Houthoff, a leading independent Dutch firm.
