Nick Holland focuses his practice on international contentious trusts and estates and acts primarily for wealthy families, individuals, institutional trustees, protectors and enforcers in disputes involving offshore trusts. Nick is also often involved in non-contentious international private wealth matters where he brings his extensive knowledge of offshore trusts and jurisdictions as well as potentially litigious outcomes to bear on the difficulties faced by international wealthy families.

Nick is qualified as a lawyer in England and Wales, the Cayman Islands, British Columbia and Ontario; and has played a key role in litigation in the Cayman Islands, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, British Virgin Islands, Singapore, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. A Canadian expatriate in London, Nick often advises Canadian individuals and institutions on matters of UK law either himself or where appropriate in conjunction with other members of McDermott’s prestigious private wealth or tax teams.

Nick is co-Chair of the annual highly respected ALM/LegalWeek Global Elite International Trusts and Estates Forum. He chaired the International Trust & Private Client: Isle of Man conferences in 2017 and 2018. He was chair of the Private Client Summer School program held at Cambridge University in 2018 and 2019. He is often asked to speak on International trusts disputes and has done so in amongst other places New York, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Toronto, Chicago, New York, Jersey, Guernsey, Provence, the Isle of Man, Singapore, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. He sits on the Consulting Editorial Board for LexisPrivateClient PSL. He is a co-author of “Contentious Trust Matters in the United Kingdom and Offshore Jurisdictions” in International Estate Planning. (New York: LexisNexis, 2019)

Nuno Cunha Barnabé has a degree in Law from the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Law (1996), where he also lectured in tax, public finances, and economics (1996-1999). He started his professional career as a senior tax consultant at former Arthur Andersen Portugal (1996-2000). While at the law firm PLMJ (2000-2019), Nuno was Head of Tax and coordinator of the Private Clients’ team, which he founded as the first multidisciplinary team in the Portuguese legal market, and of the firm’s Swiss desk.

Nuno is currently a senior partner at ABREU, where he co-heads the firm’s tax practice being responsible for Private Clients. He is also a qualified EU lawyer in Switzerland (2013) and a founding judge of the Portuguese Tax Arbitration Court (2011).

He has over 20 years’ experience in tax law and specializes on wealth taxation advising HNWI’s individuals, family businesses, private banking and asset management businesses in Portugal and Portuguese speaking countries (Brazil and Africa).

Nuno is as member (TEP) of the STEP - Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (registered at the Central London branch) and TIAETL - The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, in which he currently serves as Council Member.

When we was a partner at PLMJ, he launched the first Private Clients multidisciplinary team in the Portuguese legal market which he took with him to ABREU.

He was responsible for the team’s nomination by the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Europe in the category of Private Clients (2013). His team also received the STEP Annual Private Client Award for large-medium size firms (2018).

Nuno is a regular participant in Private Clients’ industry international events and forums, such as the IBA Private Client Tax Committee annual conference, Legal Week, the Global Leaders Forum, and the Wealth Advisors Forum.

He is recognised by Chambers Europe, Legal 500, Who’s Who and Best Lawyers Directories as a Tier1/Leading Lawyer in Tax and/or Private Clients.

Nicola Saccardo graduated from the University of Milan “Luigi Bocconi” and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Taxation from the University of Leiden (The Netherlands). He is admitted to the Italian Bar and is also qualified as Italian chartered accountant.

He is a member of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, as well as its vice President for Europe and Chair of its Tax Committee. He is an international fellow of ACTEC and member of its International Estate Planning Committee. He is a member of STEP, Deputy-Chair of the International Client Global SIG Steering Committee and member of the EU Public Policy Committee.

He leads the EU tax law course at the LL.M. of the King's College in London.


He is author of many publications on Italian tax matters and is frequent speaker at conferences.


His areas of expertise include taxation of trusts, estates and HNWIs; estate planning in general; and international and EU tax law.

Dr. Niklas J.R.M. Schmidt is a partner at the Vienna office of Wolf Theiss, one of the leading law firms in the CEE/SEE region. He has been admitted both as a lawyer and as a tax adviser. He has particular expertise regarding tax law, foundations, private clients and crypto assets. Before joining the firm in 2000, Niklas worked for several years at a “Big Four” accounting firm and as a research assistant in the tax law department at the University of Vienna.

Niklas is frequently engaged as a speaker at international tax conferences and has been a visiting lecturer at various universities in Austria and abroad. He has written several books and many articles in international tax journals. Niklas sits on the editorial board of the Austrian “SteuerExpress” magazine. Furthermore, he is a member of several international organizations (often in leadership positions), including the International Bar Association (IBA), the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law (IAETL), the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and the International Fiscal Association (IFA). Niklas is a past chair of the IBA’s Private Client Tax Committee and in this capacity has been instrumental in organizing several private wealth related conferences in London.

 

Apart from his private client related work, Niklas is well known for his crypto know-how. He has been involved in the crypto space since 2013 – as a researcher, as an investor and as a lawyer. Niklas has been advising family offices, foundations, trustees, wealthy individuals and banks on various topics related to crypto assets. He is the founder of the WT Crypto Academy, an educational initiative for non-crypto natives over 20 hours ("from zero to hero"), where he has trained more than a thousand lawyers in the last few years. His vast expertise in the area of crypto has been recognized by his inclusion in Citywealth's worldwide list of top 100 crypto advisors. Niklas is a member of the advisory board of the Digital Asset Association Austria (DAAA), and is frequently interviewed by newspapers on crypto topics, in particular due to his deep technical knowledge and good market overview. He is the author of a German language FAQ-style book on crypto and a co-editor of the leading English language book covering crypto taxation in more than 40 countries.

Íñigo Aguirrezabala specializes in advising on the tax aspects of investment and asset structures for national and international investors. He regularly advises family offices, private equity funds, family businesses, funds and high-net-worth individuals on their transactions and on structuring their investments. He also advises individuals and families on organizing their personal and business assets and on their inheritance planning.

He spent over four years working in the US, enabling him to acquire extensive knowledge of international taxation, particularly of the investment vehicles and structures used by European, US and Latin American investors.

His practice includes defending taxpayers’ interests in tax inspection proceedings.

He has been lecturing on international taxation in the Master in Tax Consultancy at Universidad de Navarra since 2018.

Ruth Bloch-Riemer’s practice focuses on domestic and international tax law.

She regularly advises Swiss and foreign high net worth individuals in all taxation matters. In particular, she supports clients with regard to wealth and succession planning, the structuring of charitable contributions, questions in the context of the taxation of art and artists, and questions within the field of the domestic and international structuring and coordination of their pension and social security.

Furthermore, Ruth Bloch-Riemer is advising domestic and international companies and managers in all taxation and social security matters particularly in the context of compensation, i. a. within employee participation schemes, and in the development and implementation of complex domestic and cross-border pension solutions.

In her areas of practice, Ruth Bloch-Riemer supports clients both in the context of compliance work and non-contentious procedures as well as in the context of litigation vis-à-vis domestic administrative and judicial authorities.

Ruth Bloch-Riemer regularly publishes and speaks at conferences on tax and social security matters. She serves as an expert for the oral Swiss tax expert examinations.
