Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) - Investigations, Powers and Penalties

In recent years, MDBs have used their investigative authority to sanction firms for misconduct, particularly corruption, fraud, and bid rigging.  This type of misconduct often also violates domestic law of affected countries, as well as the laws of the U.K. and U.S. The consequences of an MDB investigation can be significant.  The primary punishment handed out by MDBs is debarment from contracts that the banks fund—if a company is debarred by one MDB, the other four automatically debar the company as well.  Further, a number of countries (especially in the EU) will unilaterally refuse to deal with such a company while they are disbarred.
